The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
