Delhi Rises to Toxic Pollution After Diwali
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" range.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Several parts of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the recommended level established by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and Current Developments
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season begins.
Yet recently, the recently formed city administration approached the supreme court to request a modification of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Court Ruling and Reality
Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, the court agreed to the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous readings seen during Diwali in at least three years.
Cross-Border Consequences
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the events.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Near the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever measured in China's capital, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the city is caused by a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.
In these regions, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing toxic pollution that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.
Medical and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for 10,000 premature fatalities each year in the capital.
