British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
