Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
